Today, people look at the internet on all kinds of devices, from phones and tablets to desktop monitors and huge HD TVs. Each of these devices has a screen of a unique size and shape. It used to be that we only cared about the desktop experience, but a website built at that size is not always easy to use on a smaller screen.
Responsive Web Design is a way of building websites so that they respond differently to screens of different sizes. A responsive website automatically adjusts its layout to fit your screen instead of forcing you to scroll around or zoom in and out.

Notice that the same elements are always present, they’re just arranged differently depending on the width of the screen. The best way to see this in action is to view my website on your computer, resize your browser window, and watch the site adjust.

Need to know the name of a font on a website or in a particular image/photo? Here are two tools that I find handy for determining which font someone is using.
WhatTheFont – Upload an image and this service will try to match your font to one in their database, or find other similar fonts.
WhatFont Browser plugin – Install this plugin on Safari or Chrome and just click to find out what font a website is using.
If you’re putting photos on the web, you should make sure they are optimized to load quickly. Here are a couple of free tools to make your image file sizes smaller.
It’s also good to make sure your photos aren’t bigger than they need to be on the screen. If you need a free photo editing tool (for cropping/resizing), check out this previous tech tip.
There are a handful of fonts that are overused because they come pre-installed on most people’s machines (i.e. Papyrus, Zapfino, Comic Sans). Before you reach for that quirky pre-installed font, consider looking for something new! There are several sites out there with great free and pay-what-you-want fonts.
